Transforming the Healthcare Value Chain

Healthcare Exchange 2009

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Westin Boston Waterfront
Boston, MA

Over the last few decades, healthcare and life sciences companies have built silos both tall and wide. As a result, visibility, communication and collaboration are limited. Without transparency and collaboration, inefficiencies, waste, and excess cost will continue to run rampant in the value chain.

At this year’s healthcare conference, we will look across the healthcare value chain to understand what has worked and what the industry can do to devise creative, collaborative solutions to drive efficiencies, lower costs and enhance patient outcomes. Consistent with the spectrum of our research, attendees will include manufacturers, wholesalers/distributors, logistic providers, retailers, payers and healthcare providers. We will explore key questions:

  • How do companies incorporate a patient view of healthcare into their operations?
  • How can companies create win-win scenarios with trading partners to develop better demand sensing capabilities?
  • What role do the manufacturers, wholesalers and payers play in the future environment?
  • What do hospitals and providers think about the power of supply chain?
  • We will also unveil the first annual Healthcare and Life Sciences Supply Chain Top 25, which will identify the companies that are adding the most value to the healthcare value chain today.

The Healthcare Exchange is open to manufacturers, distributors/wholesalers, retailers, payers and healthcare providers only.

08:45 - 09:30 a.m.Keynote Address—The State of Healthcare Today

Aamir Rehman, M.D., MBA , EVP & Chief Strategy Officer, St. Peter’s Health System
The cost of healthcare is skyrocketing: Fragmentation, network complexity, and lack of visibility in the healthcare supply chain only add to these challenges. Our keynote speaker will discuss how to make the supply chain go beyond just supplying quality and how companies can jointly meet the needs of the healthcare system. He will also give practical examples of how supply chain operations can add to both top-line and bottom-line growth of your organization.

09:30 - 10:30 a.m.Panel 1: Is Visibility the Rx for Our Tribulations?

Laurel Junk , Vice President, Supply Chain, Kaiser-Permanente
Nancy LeMaster, Vice President, Supply Chain, BJC Healthcare
David Reed , Vice President, Supply Chain, Cook Medical
Wayne Swanton , Director, Global Planning & Programs GPO, Abbott Laboratories
Moderator: Roddy Martin , Senior Vice President, AMR Research
The perfect storm of global economic forces, operational pressures and a major push by providers and retailers to reduce their supply chain costs is driving companies to re-think how they work in value chains. From our research, we see that good demand visibility and management yields major benefits all the way back through the value chain.

In this panel we will discuss:
  • How we can apply the principles of a demand-driven network to the healthcare value chain
  • The building blocks required to initiate or drive such transformations
  • The issues and hurdles to overcome
10:30 - 11:00 a.m.Break

Kevin O'Marah , Chief Strategy Officer, AMR Research
Debra Hofman , Vice President, Strategic Top 25 Research, AMR Research
Wayne McDonnell , Research Director, Healthcare and Life Sciences, AMR Research
Why is there only one healthcare company in AMR Research’s 2009 Supply Chain Top 25? Have you asked that question before? It certainly crossed the mind of the AMR Research Healthcare and Life Sciences team. In this session, we will be identifying the Top 25 companies across the end-to-end healthcare value chain. Given today’s value-driven focus on healthcare, this first annual Top 25 ranking will initiate discussions on efficiency and effectiveness that are crucial to the healthcare debate.

01:30 - 02:15 p.m.Healthcare Reform: Is the Supply Chain the Promise To Cure All Ills?

Hussain Mooraj , Vice President, Healthcare and Life Sciences, AMR Research
Hussain Mooraj will present the benefits of an effective and efficient supply chain as well as findings from the 2009 AMR Research healthcare value chain research study. They will discuss how companies have been sharpening their focus on cost reduction in their supply chains as they are feeling more pressure from the Obama administration and the effects of healthcare reform.

02:15 - 03:15 p.m.Panel 2: Supply Chain Alignment with Contracting and Revenue Management

Tom Sullivan , President, Supply Chain & Business Processes, Johnson & Johnson HCS
Dale Locklair , Vice President, Supply Chain, McLeod Health
Moderator: Hussain Mooraj , Vice President, Healthcare and Life Sciences, AMR Research
The life science industry is facing tremendous profit and growth pressures, a dramatic shift in the payer market, and increased regulatory complexity. As a result, industry leaders have started to transform contract and revenue management processes that have traditionally been heavily siloed, thus inhibiting collaboration with internal functions as well as with customers.

arrowdown

Our panel of senior executives will discuss how leaders are moving away from an inconsistent picture of customers, contracts, and product performance to create win-win scenarios with trading partners. They will address questions such as:

  • How will the role of contracting and revenue management change in the future as part of a broader supply/value chain that spans manufacturing to payers?
  • How do we build greater visibility into consumption and supply chain integrity through contracting processes?
  • How do you increase customer satisfaction to build the trust that drives value across the entire ecosystem, from distributors and hospitals to physicians and patients?
  • How can technology play a role in creating an insightful and holistic view of the contracting landscape?
03:15 - 03:45 p.m.Break
03:45 - 04:45 p.m.Panel 3: The Vision for the Information-Enabled Healthcare Value Chain
